The success of this concept relies on three things: first, that the lower pitches have a greater number of performance forces and the higher pitches have a lesser number of performance forces; second, that each of the sections should be voiced as if to be a pyramid of sound within the larger pyramid; and third, that the lower-pitched sounds should be louder than those that are higher in pitch level. One can achieve a very well-balanced sound by using the same approach with the choir. Here are several examples of how division can work in the choral ensemble. For the purposes of clarity, all examples will be shown with a base of twenty-two singers—eleven female voices and eleven male voices, with each voice assigned a number 1–22 (female voices 1–11, and male voices 12–22). Figure 6.9 shows how those divisions work. Note the various assignments for each voice part, as some of them move up or down, depending on the number of parts written.
